News with Haiti relief
At
the Presbyterian Women's Spring Gathering on March 8, Susan Turbeville
of the Haiti Education Foundation said only three schools were lost
completely in the January earthquake. The Foundation has established
a Disaster Fund to help education resume in the mountains of southern
Haiti.
Forty elementary and 10 high schools are being funded by the Foundation
and over 13,000 children are being educated. The first school was
established in 1981.
“Education is a gift that multiplies in the sharing,”
Turbeville said. “Once voodoo priests ruled these villages,
but now children who learn to read are teaching others in their
families. They are reading the Bible, and this is giving HOPE to
the people of Haiti.” |
