About Presbyterian Kirk In The Pines

Gail Salmen —Memorial Committee Moderator
While living on a dairy farm in Long Grove, Ill., Gail attended her first eight years of school as one of six girls in a class with 18 boys. She graduated Ela-Vernon High School in Lake Zurich, Ill. and became employed by Jewel Tea Company where she worked 10 years, rising to service manager.

After Gail and David Salmen were married she served as supervisor of Zurich Insurance Company’s collections, audit and procedures departments. Prior to retirement, she worked in the specialties division dealing with malpractice; kidnap protection and other high-end liability insurance.

She enjoyed serving as usher for nine years at her UCC Congregational Church in Illinois, finding it fun to greet new people as they came in the door for the first time.

While David attends Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, Gail found the Kirk to be friendly and became a member shortly after they moved to the Village in 2001.

Gail is active in HSV Breakfast Lions Ladies’ Auxiliary and both Salmens assist with Meals on Wheels and Knights of Columbus activities.

She has been a member of the Kirk Memorial Committee several years and as elder she will serve as moderator.

Memorial
The Memorial Committee oversees the Kirk’s memorial funds and the many resulting projects. Dedicated in 1996, the Memorial Garden continues to be a peaceful place for meditation and remembrance. A 9' 6" Celtic Cross was added to the Memorial Garden in the fall of 2005. The area around the cross has been landscaped and can now accommodate small weddings. This committee oversees its care and maintenance, as well as the interment process and records. A subcommittee, the Memorial Garden Beautification Group, encourages Kirk members to get involved with the beauty and care of the garden.
